ADDRESS OF THE MINISTER OF MACEDONIA – THRACE
Mr. NIKOLAOS TSIARTSIONIS AT THE INAUGURATION OF THE
EYATH SA PROJECT:
“CONSTRUCTION OF SEWAGE DRAINAGE PROJECTS OF THE SINDOS AREA AND THE PEFKA COMMUNITY OF THESSALONIKI”

FOR THE PART OF THE PEFKA AREA PROJECT

Thessaloniki, December 14, 2005

“Ladies and gentlemen,

It is a special day today for the beautiful Pefka community.

A steady demand of the area’s residents is finally being implemented by upgrading the quality of life and the environment, as the completion of the sewerage networks not only contributes to the protection of the Thermaikos Gulf but also to the assurance of the quality of the water table through which the city of Thessaloniki is supplied.

It is the beginning of a new era for the Pefka community as not only are the citizens’ relations with the environment restored but also the community’s historical profile is reinstated.

The area has exceptional natural beauty and ideal climatic conditions. It is no coincidence that since the beginning of the 1960s, it has been a holiday resort for many residents of Thessaloniki but also a destination for many patients to rehabilitate their health. The fact that the Papanikolaou Hospital (formerly the Sanatorium), one of Thessaloniki’s largest hospitals, is found here proves its climatic singularity and its great comparative advantage that we need to preserve and enhance as much as we can.

Unfortunately, the residential development that has taken place in recent decades, coupled with the inadequacy of environmental protection strategies by the Central Administration, has brought the area face to face with the problem of ecological burden.

But these belong to the past. Today, we look to the present and future of the region with optimism and are convinced that the development of the Pefka community is coordinated with the standards of sustainability and environmental protection.

Ladies and gentlemen,

Today, EYATH SA is a healthy company, which is constantly improving its operation, is being modernized and developed dynamically, with design and planning, providing high-grade services to the citizen.

The Ministry of Macedonia and Thrace, as a supervising Body, ensures the preservation of the social status of EYATH. SA and EYATH Assets.

Our top priority is to provide high quality and low-cost services to consumers. Our main concern is to safeguard public health and to protect the environment. With a well-designed plan and systematic approach, we are moving towards the sustainable development of Thessaloniki and the prefecture.

With today’s inauguration, we do not stop but move forward even more vigorously. For the year 2006, we are planning to expand the water supply and sewerage network of other municipalities in the Prefecture, such as Mikra and Oreokastro.

We aim to restore the relationship of the citizens with the Thermaic Gulf, but also with the two companies.

These facts allow us to see the future with optimism and to shape our strategies concerning the environment. We follow the rules of the market, without this being to the detriment of the social nature of our mission.

I congratulate the EYATH SA and Assets administrators for their excellent work, planning, and strategy development, which have led to these successful results. I am sure that their success will be the same in 2006.

We also congratulate the District of Central Macedonia, the Managing Authority, the Prefecture, the Community Council, and the Pefka community for their excellent cooperation, which led to the completion of the work we are inaugurating.

We wish to congratulate the contractor company “Hellenic Hydro Construction SA” for the successful completion of the project.

May the project be praiseworthy.

Thank you”.
